The sharing of industry knowledge from around the world has been crucial to the success of the Dohne breed in Australia.
This thirst for global knowledge was behind 17 stud Dohne breeders and industry peoples’ tour of South America as part of the International Dohne Merino Conference last month.
“The impact the Dohne is having in Uruguay is quite remarkable,” Australian Dohne Breeders Association’s Tanya Barton said.
“Australia has been the main influencer of the South American Dohne industry. A lot the genetics go over there so it was an opportunity for studs to see their genetics first-hand.”
The tour visited influential studs in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, a wool scouring plant and a research station in Uruguay, all of which Ms Barton said showcased the quality of the pure registered Australian Dohne and the commercial Dohne-Corriedale cross.
The conference, held at the Durazno Rural Society, heard from 12 speakers who discussed topics that impacted local and international sheep breeders.
