KIEWA’S historic dairy plant will not close with new owner Saputo deciding to keep it open and retain cream cheese production at the factory.
The Canadian dairy giant formerly took over the former Kiewa Butter Factory from Murray Goulburn last week.
On Monday afternoon it announced to workers who continued on the cream cheese line, following the end of milk production last year, they would keep their jobs.
“We are pleased to confirm the Kiewa processing site will remain open,” Saputo board chairman and chief executive Lino Saputo said in a media statement.
“We met with the Kiewa team today to inform them of this important decision.
“We appreciate the uncertainty that employees at the Kiewa site have experienced in recent times and extend gratitude to them for their loyalty.
“We also want to thank the community and the Kiewa farmer suppliers for their dedication to the Kiewa facility.
“We now look forward to working together to make Kiewa successful.”
