Pure Lawsons-blood Angus cows have defied the pressures of the dry season selling to $1750 a head on Auctions Plus this week.
Farmed near Smithton on Tasmania’s northwest coast, the annual production sale from the Panshanger Estate herd overall yielded an average of $1685 a head from its 174 head sold.
Convening agent, Ian Richards, Ian Richards Livestock and Elders, report that 108 cows from Panshanger’s 2014-drop (rising three year-olds), sold in six lots of 18 head and pregnancy-tested in calf, making $1690 to $1730 a head and averaging $1701 while 66 head of its 2014-drop group of rising four year-olds, also PTIC, made $1350 to $1750.
Mr Richards said this was an outstanding result due to the dry conditions in Victoria and New South Wales where in the past a large percentage of these cows have been sold.
“In fact all cows were retained to Tasmania” Mr Richards said. “These destinations included Flinders Island, East Tamar, Breadalbane, Fingal Valley, Bothwell and Dysart, however the most pleasing aspect was that a lot repeat buyers competed in the sale and a good percentage of these were successful”.
Mr Richards said good inquiry was received from the mainland, however they were run-over – “the sale was too hot for them”. This represents a big tick for the performance of the Panshanger cattle and the 30 years of dedicated breeding by Panshanger principal, George Mills”.
