Roberts Limited, Tasmania, conducted its fourth autumn weaner sale at Powranna on Thursday, with many good quality lines of beef calves consigned from many parts of the state.
There was not as much weight offered as in previous sales but the quality of most was very good.
Competition for the steer lines in the 1960-head yarding was provided by Tasmania Feedlot, northwest coast restockers and backgrounders plus some northern Midlands interests.
The best steer lines sold to good competition to maintain recent rates while the lighter steers were much harder to sell at the lowest prices not seen before this season, which was surprising given recent rain, NLRS market reporter Richard Bailey commented.
The official reporter quoted best heavy steers made $940 to $1200, medium weights $920-$1170 (320-350c/kg) and light steers $570-$1010, av 320-330c/kg.
Very light steers made $400 to $550 or 280c/kg
Best heifers made $870 to $1120, medium weights $740-$890 (285c), light heifers $410-$780 (250c) and very light $360-$460.
