Locals said the last time there was such a crowd was for the Waltzing Matilda centenary in April 1995.
It was the national song that drew a similar crowd, thanks to the opening of the new Waltzing Matilda Centre, an event celebrated by thousands on Friday, and solidified by a four-day festival with music at its core.
