A small yarding at Kyneton’s monthly store cattle sale still managed to achieve what one agent said was respectable” result.
McGrath Rodwells Livestock Kyneton’s Kieran McGrath said steers made from $600 to a top of $1540, with most going for between 270cents/kilogram and 316c/kg.
“Two feedlot buyers, one a major domestic buyer and the other a private operator, kept the job pretty solid, along with a few locals, who were bidding on some of the smaller lines of Angus weaners,” Mr McGrath said.
“It was a respectable result, considering how we have had a bit of rain here.
It was a respectable result, considering how we have had a bit of rain here. A lot of our usual buying areas are very, very dry.

He said prices were also pleasing, in light of the prime cattle market.
Mr McGrath said Brian Smith, Iona, Trentham, made among the best prices, with 24 Glendan Park blood nine-to-10-month-old Poll Hereford steers.
The lighter cattle, averaging 359kg, made $1000, or 278c/kg, while the 456kg steers finished at $1240, or 271c/kg.
He said Roseberry Hill sold 20 Quarterford blood seven to eight-month-old Angus cross weaners, making $900 for the steers and $775 for the heifers.
Landmark Dwyer’s Greg Dwyer said the sale had been brought forward, due to Anzac Day, which resulted in a smaller yarding than usual.
“I thought it wasn’t too bad, considering what’s going on with the weather and the small yarding,” Mr Dwyer said.
Landmark Dwyer’s John Robson said it was a tougher sale, “in line with everywhere else.”
The tops of a draft of 71 Angus steers, from Seqirus, Woodend, averaging 291kg, sold to $880, or 302c/kg.
The September 2017-drop Weemalla blood steers “are the sort of cattle that was making four dollars, six months ago, and are now selling for three” Mr Robson said.
Mac Barty, Sutton Grange, sold seven, 10-11-month-old Hereford Glendan Park blood weaner steers, for $810 and eight heifers for $740.
Mr Robson said the Barro group sold seven Hereford cows, with March drop Poll Hereford calves at foot, for $1300.
A pen of 11 Angus cows, pregnancy tested to calve in August, offered by Aaron Gay, Sutton Grange, made $1240.
