The future of further sales being conducted at Bothwell, Tasmania, has been raised after Roberts mustered merely 709 head for its annual weaner sale last Thursday.
In years gone by, this once prestigious sale had yarded more than 5500 weaners, but over the past five years numbers have reduced to levels that may not be sustainable going forward.
Most of the competition came from north-west coast backgrounders and bullock finishers, and prices were generally cheaper than the previous Tasmanian weaner sales for 2018.
The heaviest steers made $1010 to $1360 per head, medium weights $770-$1310, and light weights $680-$890.
The best steers averaged 310-330 cents per kilogram, while the seconds worked out between 285-310c/kg.
The few heavy heifers made $1020-$1050/head, medium weights $610-$1000, and light weights $440-$730, with most averages sitting between 230-250c/kg.
