Demand was mixed and varied considerably at the fourth market in the Tasmanian weaner series at Powranna on Wednesday.
In a sale of 1260 conducted by Elders, a larger portion of penning contained well-bred lines of Hereford cattle some of which were consigned from the high country region of the state.
However in spite of these noted genetic, and also the fact that much of Tasmania has received a solid drenching over the past week, demand continued to slide, with heavier drafts of steers averaging slightly easier while lighter steers lost a further $100-$150 a head in value.
The steer market generally sold all breeds of cattle between 300 to 330kg, with an isolated pair of sales making 400-424c/kg.
This saw the heavier end of the steers realise $900 to $1200 before topping at $1420 for a yard of Santa/Hereford-cross while lighter weights generally made $680 to $950 a head.
The heifer market, which two weeks ago received an almighty caning, bounced back strongly as most traded a solid range of $650 to $880 a head or 280-300c/kg, before topping at $1200 a head, again for a repeat buyer yard of Santa//Hereford-cross.
