Wodonga’s independent agents offered 1988 head at Barnawartha, Thursday, which sold to strong demand from feedlots and opportunity feeders.
Their price range for steers was, in liveweight price terms, between 290&315c/kg, and heifers mostly 285-305c/kg lwt.
Competition was quite strong, but buyers were more selective for future gain, than any short term result.
Cows with calves sold to $2360, but joined heifers were hard to sell, making mostly from $1190-$1600. One pen was not sold, due to a low price offer.
Yearling steers sold at current rates, the top price was $1450, and most equaled 258-276c/kg lwt.
The pick of the steer prices of calves 8-12 months was $1050-$1200 with buyers looking for quality bred steers showing good conformation.
Most of the heifers were in forward store to fat condition, which saw some purchased for slaughter. Yearling heifers were cheaper selling to $1035, but younger heifers sold at firm rates.
Prices ranged from $670-$1080, equaling 270-315c/kg lwt.
