COMPETITION was animated from the start of the Landmark Casterton Steer Weaner sale on Tuesday.

With the sale starting on larger lines of Angus steers, the first 14 pens sold at rates from 310-319c/kg.or a range of $1132 to $1272 a head.

Tuesday’s sale saw cattle with EU accreditation claim a premium from buyers of as much as 15-20c/kg, adding a boost to vendor accounts..

Karyn and Chris Jarrad, Forest View, Sandford, with their 41 steers steers, Pathfinder blood, weighing 386kg and EU accredited that sold for 328c/kg or $1266/head.

Leonie and Hamish McNicol, Meteranvale, Dunrobin, sold 68 Angus steers to a top of 335c/kg for 34 weighing an average of 331kg.

Fifty Angus weighing 363kg offered account The Gums sold for 329c/kgor $1194/head to Landmark Casterton.

Landmark Casterton’s Rick Smith said the premium had been a great bonus this year.

Mr Smith said Thomas Food International was particularly strong on steers in the 260-270kg range, bidding up to 360c/kg for select lines of EU cattle.

He said the cattle had come forward for sale better than previous years after a “magic” season.

Mr Smith quoted steers at the heavy end 360kg plus as selling consistently at around 310 to 315c/kg but jumping to 325c/kg to 330c/kg for EU accredited lines.

This year was the final draft after supporting the Casterton sale for many years for Brian and Monica Murphy, Dunrobin Homestead, Dunrobin.

In the 280 to 360kg range there was a solid floor at around 325 to 330c/kg.while there was plenty of competition for lighter cattle at anything from 340 to 360c/kg.

A pen of 54 Angus steers account Baroona weighed in at 391kg and sold for 318c/kg to Landmark Leongatha.

The same buyer followed up with 25 steers 394kg at 315c/kg or $1241 sold account Mullagh.

Tora Downs again forwarded a great line of 28 steers weighing 408kg EU accredited which sold at 312c/kg, or $1272 a head.to TFI. The pen was part of a consignment of 61 that averaged 319c/kg on a weight of 339kg or $1085 a head.

Karingal Pastoral Company forwarded 72 Hereford steers with the top on a per head basis being $1147 for 17 steers averaging 371kg and 309c/kg. The total draft averaged 324c/kg on a weight of 305kg.

Major buyers were Landmark Leongatha, Landmark International, Emms Mooney, Miller Whan & John, TFI, CLW, Elders Holbrook, Harmony, and local support.
