The much anticipated Southern Weaner Sales started strongly this morning with a solid offering.
Corcoran Parker were the first to host a weaner calf sale in 2018 and unlike previous years there were very few cattle weighing below 310 kilograms liveweight, and this kept some competition out of the bidding.
Corcoran Parker offered 2763 Angus steers and heifers, which included a few yearling cattle. Competition was quite varied, despite lacking some of the usual buying force.
Rangers Valley feedlot purchased several pens of EU accredited steers, Hopkins River feedlot was also in the mix, but most of the competition came from local areas through to Wangaratta.
Willis Mobile Contracting, “Pelican Point”, Table Top, NSW, sold 19 yearling Angus steers, 533kgs, for the sales top price of $1490.
The top price for weaned steer calves went to L Nankervis, Laceby, selling 15 steers for $1255. These steers, like others in a weight range of 350-411kgs, equaled 316-325c/kg lwt.
The Smiths, from Woodenbong, finally make it to Wodonga
John Smith from “Glenayr”, Woodenbong, on the NSW North Coast had wanted to come to the Wodonga Angus weaner sales for 20 years.
So, finally, this year he made it with wife, Maree.
Kevin Draper not rushed at first sale
Veteran Wodonga cattle fattener, Kevin Draper, came to the first Angus weaner sale for the year at Barnawartha selling complex today looking for value for money.
“I am in no hurry, there are a number of weaner sales to go,” he said at Corcoran Parker’s successful sale.
He was looking for 20 to 25 lighter weaner steers around 150-200kg to grow out to 550-600kg liveweight at 18 months on his farm, “Leneva”, near Wodonga.
A family affair tops Angus sale at Wodonga
It was a family affair for the Willis family of Table Top near Albury when they topped Corcoran and Parker’s annual premier Angus sale at the Barnawartha selling complex near Wodonga today.
Although the bulk of the 2763 cattle sold were weaners, Tim Willis, “Pelican Point”, Table Top topped the sale from the small offering of grown steers and heifers.
