GLENTHOMPSON stud Nareeb Nareeb sold more Merinos and Poll Merinos rams than last year and at higher top and average prices.
Overall a further six Poll Merino rams sold to increase the average by $278 while a further nine merinos sold to increase the average by $243.
The sale was opened with a two year-old stud ram, which is a proved Poll ram already used in the Nareeb Nareeb program over their top line of Poll ewes.
“He is a great balanced ram with depth of wool that will compliment any flock,” Principal Richard Beggs said.
“We already have lambs on the ground with 20 percent of lambs classing a score one which is very good while another 70 percent scored a class 2, so he already has runs on the board.”
This ram topped the sale at $5,000 being knocked down to repeat buyers Glenthompson Pastoral, Glenthompson.
This ram was sired by Barton 2.459, with a body weight of 122.5 kilograms with a micron of 17.4 at one year of age.
Lou Mann of Glenthompson Pastoral said they were very happy with their purchase.
“We found this ram to have excellent frame, a lovely long clean wool with a great structure. We wanted a ram to help increase our wool clip and we believe this ram will help.”
There was good representation of volume buyers on the day with Western District Pastoral Company, Willaura, purchasing 20 rams to a top of $2250 to average $1575.
“We have been long term supporters of the Nareeb Nareeb program for more than 20 years. We purchase rams that are even and well structured, highly productive and produce lots of wool and we have again put together another line of strong rams.” Mr Upton, Western District Pastoral said.
George and Nick Mills, Panshanger Estate, Longford, Tas, where another volume buyer purchasing 11 ram through the auction to average $2340, while hoping to pick up a further 11 rams the following day at the private selections.
“We used to purchase rams from the Barton stud, but have been buying here since Nareeb Nareeb purchased the stud,” Nick Mills said.
“We find these rams are well suited to our environment and management where they run in conjunction with cropping.”
Henry Smith of Cressy House, Cressy, Tas, helped to fill the ship, purchasing nine rams to average $1916.
“This is our 3rd year here and we love the heavy wool cutting rams and their big frames. We find these rams are the similar type to the Barton rams we used to buy while handling our climate. They are just a good dual purpose sheep”.
Damian Meagher, WISS Melbourne, was also on hand to purchase 14 rams on behalf of his clients to average $1642.
Reflecting on the sale Richard Beggs said he was very happy with the sale result. “It reflects the current market, which signals that people are joined more ewes to Merino rams. The Poll results also slightly indications the buyer preference for the Poll genetics”.
The sale was conducted by Elders, with auctioneer Ross Milne saying “[it was a ] very solid sale from top to bottom, with an excellent clearance throughout with more rams offered to a better average”.
