STEERS attracted strong prices, at last week’s Colac store sale, according to local agents.
Colac Livestock Agents Association president Matt Nelson said agents and vendors were pleased with the sale, “considering how things have been going. “We had a really good steer sale, while cows and calves were on a par with previous sales,” Mr Nelson, from Charles Stewart, said.
Charles Stewart-Dove’s Terry Dove said the bigger cattle remained the best buys. “Not many cattle are getting into the yards, as its been very wet,” Mr Dove said. “It’s just going to continue on - you are going to have grass fever hit any time, once the mud decides to turn to grass,” Mr Dove said.
Mr Nelson said there was a run of 350-400 kilogram steers, which sold for between 310-320c/kilogram, while lightweight Black Baldies, between 200-280kg sold between $900-1200. Cattle went back to Colac, Camperdown and across to Ballarat. “We had a bit of competition from Warrnambool way, this month, but it was also very well supported, locally. HF Richardson’s Paul Kerr agreed the market was back a little, but it was still a very good sale for the time of year and conditions.
He said 13 weaned 10-12month old Angus steers, a/c HR and BA Beach sold for $1220, while six 10-12 month old Herefords, a/c AR Richens, went for $1200.
