Wangaratta producers are holding their spring 2016 drop calves for the annual store sale at Wangaratta, which was why there was only 350 head offered last Friday.
It explains the mixed, and plainer selection of cattle penned.
Good size yardings, and quality cattle attract competition, and the lack of numbers and quality, left the buying gallery at home for the Wangaratta monthly store sale.
Having said this, buyers were in attendance, although most were locals.
To best judge the quality, one needs to look at the sale’s averages.
There was only 187 steers penned, and they averaged $855, which indicates the age and weight of those offered.
The 81 heifers penned averaged just $761, again a reflection of age weight and condition.
Drafts of cattle were only very small. A&C McIntosh sold 3 older steers for $1210 to top the sale, plus 6 for $1022, and they equaled 300-310c/kg lwt.
L,D&D Jackel sold seven heifers (349kgs) for the top price of $1050, and Bunyarra Past Co, 10 head for $900.
Lighter weight heifers of J&E Rankin sold for $800, and G&J Golin, 6 head for $784, and the equivalent liveweight prices were between 300&328c/kg.
N&R Schultz, and F Kaup, sold the top price cows and calves for $2000, and bringing up the rear was HG&DE Ronald selling 6 outfits from $1400-$1450.
