Steers might have averaged $30 to $50 a head cheaper at Wangaratta on Friday compared to a month ago, according to Peter Dargan, Rodwells.
Mr Dargan said many of the cattle in the 1016-head yarding (including calves) did not weigh as heavily as they looked.
“They’re starting to winter just that little bit,” he said.
“It was still a very good result.”
Heavier steers of 380 to 390 kilograms made prices equivalent to 360 cents/kg. Indicative prices for lighter steers included a pen with an average weight of 312kg made 400c/kg and a pen at 250kg made 420-430c/kg.
Glen Canny’s pen of 18 Angus steers, 391kg, sold for $1400 (equivalent to 360c/kg), and D&K Patton’s 13 Angus steers, same weight, made $1390.
Tawandi Farms had 18 Angus steers, which Mr Dargan described as “very good” make $1230 or 400c/kg.
Account TA,AR,A&E Walker’s top pen of 30 Angus steers, Te Mania blood, 413kg, made $1040.
Mr Dargan said heifers sold reasonably well, with highlights including R&S Leavold’s 11 Angus heifers, 376kg, making $1250 or 323c/kg. L&M Thiele’s 16 Angus heifers, 322kg, made $1090 or nearly 340c/kg.
Benalla Lutheran’s five heifers, 411kg, made $1290.
Many of the steers and heifers weighing 270-300kg or more were purchased to go on grain; the others to “opportune blokes” Mr Dargan said.
The 54 cows and calves averaged $1992. This category was topped by P&V Hourigan’s nine Angus-Fresian heifers with Limousin calves at-foot, not rejoined, that made $2700.
