ROSEDALE CHAROLAIS
23 of 24 bulls sold to $8500, av $5020
ROSEDALE Charolais’ southern bull sale at Yea Saleyards last Friday achieved a near total clearance, when 23 of 24 bulls on offer sold. One bull from each Tambo River Charolais and Riverstone also sold, for $6500 and $4000 respectively.
The Rosedale draft topped at $8500, for Rosedale Legal (P), which was sold to Garrison Cattle Feeders, Swan Hill. Garrison’s three bulls averaged $7333.
The sale-topping April 2015-drop bull weighed 746 kilograms, had a scrotal measurement of 38 centimetres and and eye muscle area scan of 118 square cm. The Rosedale First Class (AI) (P) son had estimated breeding values (EBVs) in the top five per cent of the breed for birth weight (-2.4kg), milk (+15kg) and scrotal size (+0.8cm); top 10pc for calving ease and for domestic and export indexes (at +$45 and +$60 respectively).
The second top-priced bull, Rosedale Layback (P) is another Rosedale First Class son. The September 2015-drop, 602kg bull was knocked down to Max and Joan Field, Kimberley, Tasmania. Its EBVs were in the top 10pc for birth weight (-1.4kg), calving ease direct (+9.4pc) and domestic and export indexes (+$47 and +$61), top 15pc for milk and top 20pc for gestation length.
The Fields also purchased three bulls, which included another Rosedale bull and the Tambo River bull for an overall av $7000. It was was their first time buying bulls on the mainland. They run Hereford-Friesians cross cows and use Charolais bulls to produce vealers, which they aim to turn off at 11 months.
Rosedale principal James Millner, Blayney, NSW, said it was the first time they’d sold bulls to Tasmania at their Victorian sale.
Glenshiel Pastoral, Butchers Ridge (near Gelantipy in East Gippsland) booked the most bulls, at seven all at $4000, through Colin Jones, Bill Wyndham & Co. Mr Jones said Glenshiel had bought similar Rosedale bulls two years ago and liked their growth and softness in their 800-cow herd.
Mr Milner said he and father Michael were pleased with the sale and that bulls went to a good spread of areas.
He said while the draft was even in its high quality, there was a variety of types of bulls to suit different buyers.
