A SUCCESSFUL sale of F1 females, saw heifers with calves at-foot (CAF), PTIC heifers and unjoined heifers, all sell well at Leongatha on Monday.
Offering 1300 head, the combined agents sold a few heifers that have already calved, most with CAF 1-4 weeks. Allison Goss sold 14 Angus-Friesian heifers, 2.5 years, and very well grown, topping the sale at $3150.
Mindarra Park sold 29 Angus-Friesian and Hereford-Friesian heifers with very young calves by Limousin bulls from $3000-$3100.
While the yarding was smaller than at last year’s sale, quality was not compromised with the very good season aiding some excellent growth, weight and condition.
Competition was very strong for some of the regular lines of heifers with repeat buyers making a big play in the market. Top of the sale for heifers, 2.5 years, in-calf to Limousin bulls, was JD&EA Keogh, Foster.
They sold 9 heifers and calves for $2940, but their heifers peaked at $2760, to average a very healthy $2611 for 45 head. RW Bruce, Leongatha North, sold 93 Angus-Friesian heifers to $2650, a $2357.
Another of the larger vendors was JP O’Loughlin, Berry’s Creek, who sold 79 PTIC heifers to $2625. However, demand did vary throughout the sale, which saw most of the PTIC heifers sell from $2000 to the top price, but numerous sales were recorded from $1700-$2000.
Some of these sales were for younger heifers rising 2-2 years. Some of these shied away from the traditional Limousin calving to be PTIC to Charolais, and some Angus bulls.
M&I Hendriksen, Skye, sold 53 Angus-Friesian heifers, PTIC to Charolais bulls, from $1725-$2000. Mindarra Park, offered a good insight into this scenario, selling 54 heifers PTIC to Limousin bulls, making from $1750-$2500. The lower prices were for younger heifers.
A very good quality offering of unjoined heifers was penned, which displayed a big range in weight and condition. This section of the sale was very strong with some of the sales vendors now purchasing unjoined heifers for next year.
B,D&M Calder, Dumbalk, sold 25 heifers by Harris Angus bulls, from $1700-$1810. Many sales were noted between $1500&$1690. D,N&I Couper, & A Lillholm sold 35 Angus-Friesian heifers from $1580-$1680.
Looking at sales of bucket reared calves, it appeared that price was no object. Sales were noted between $650&$980 with T Dunn, Bena, seling 21 Angus-Friesian calves from $840-$980. Pound for pound, these were the dearest sales.
However, everything is relative, and these sales were part of a very strong market overall.
There was an odd sale of unjoined heifers that were purchased by a processor.
