Rob Lawrance and Georgie Luckock, Banool, Gatum, will offer 80 mostly Poll Hereford steers.
The March/April-drop Poll Hereford calves are of Ennerdale bloodlines, which Mr Lawrance said they used for the stud’s poll status, fat and fertility traits.
They are also impressed by their temperaments and have found the calves grow well – with this year’s calves growing an average of 2.46kg/head/day in the past quarter. The calves are grazing on highly improved pastures.
Mr Lawrance is very happy with the March/April-drop calves and said it had been the best season in his career. They weaned the calves on October 21.
He said weaning calves earlier helped get cows into top nick compared to weaning them at Christmas. They’re running 225 cows, a third of which are spring calvers.
Most of the cows are now Herefords and having the good-doing, hardy cattle breed and Merinos sheep has been part of simplifying the farm’s management.
The calves received Pilliguard, Multimin, 6-in-1 and a long-acting Cydectin drench.
