WELL-BRED, quality store cattle continue to sell well at Bairnsdale, with the tops remaining firm and plain steers and heifers returning good prices.

In last Friday’s 2260-head yarding, grown steers sold to $1850 – for a pen of 18mo Angus, 539kg, vendor WA Schauble, Dargo.

Hammond Logging, Bombala, NSW, sold 18mo Angus steers, Millah Murrah and Forres bloodlines, 502kg, $1810. A second pen, 463kg, sold at $1690.

Meerlieu’s J Geehman sold yearling to 14mo Hereford steers to $1815, average $1535. 

Judith Treasure, Stratford, sent in 16-17mo Angus steers that sold to $1810, av $1655.

Dennis and Rosalie Stringer, Forge Creek, sold 9-10mo Angus steers, Ireland Angus bloodline, 395kg, $1565, at Bairnsdale on Friday.

There were a couple of drafts of steers into the sale.

Mekkens P/L, Orbost, sold a line of yearling to yearling-off Angus steers – the top two pens, average 438kg and 430kg, sold at $1500. The draft av $1475. A further pen, of Black Baldy steers, 443kg, $1560.

Harry Coleman and Helena Parkington, Glenaladale, sent in 12mo Hereford steers that sold to $1300. Their same-age Angus heifers, made $1100, and Hereford heifers $1000.

Dennis and Rosalie Stringer, Forge Creek, sent in a pen of 9-10mo Angus steers, Ireland Angus bld, 395kg, $1565.

Towamba’s Donna Tupper Lucas sold a pen of Hereford and black baldy steers, 7-8mo, to $890, av $840.

Several lines of heifers sold well on Friday. 

Heifers sold to $1700, for a line of PTIC 2.5 and 3.5yo Herefords. These heifers from CA&SM Commins, Ensay, weighed av liveweights of 496-627kg. The draft av $1663.

Holston’s Pastoral, Ensay, sent in a line of Angus heifers, that sold to $1190, av $1072. 

J Hayward & Partners, Ensay, sold Hereford heifers to $1170, average $1125. Their black baldy heifers made $1080. 

Ken and Kym Skews, Ensay, sent in 14mo Hereford heifers, EU-accredited, 320kg, that sold to $1090, av $1025. Their pen of same-age black baldy heifers, 308kg, made $1140.

Denise Willox, Briagolong, sold 12-13mo Angus heifers, for $1120. 

G&N Umback, Bombala, sold Limousin cows and calves, $2120.

Christa Treasure, Iguana Creek, sold Hereford heifers with Hereford calves-at-foot and depastured to a Hereford/White Shorthorn bull, $1910.

FH Grumley & Co, Woodglen, sold black baldy cows with Angus calves, $1710.

MC Allen, Benambra, sold Angus cows with black baldy calves, $1690 and Hereford pairs, $1490.

Chris Lee, Munro, sold Angus cows with black baldy calves, sired by a polled Hereford bull, $1610. 

Gabrielle and Louise Lee, Munro, sold Angus cows and calves, $1540.

Damian Smith, Damton Farming Trust, Bombala, sent in mixed-age cows Hereford and calves, $1520; black baldy cows and calves, $1360; and first-calving Hereford heifers with black baldy calves, $1220. 

The majority of buyers were restockers from South, Central and East Gippsland, chasing cattle to finish on pasture.
