The State government is helping farmers future proof against drought, with grants available from July 1 for business planning, training and on-farm preparedness.
As part of the government’s $27million drought support package, announced in November 2015, $1.5m is being made available for the Farm Risk Management Grants program.
Eligible farm businesses can receive up to $10,000 each, for a combination of activities to improve risk management and drought preparedness practices aimed at enhancing overall farm performance.
Acting Agriculture minister Jacinta Allen said the government was backing farmers to bounce back, from the impact of drought.
“We know that unfortunately this won’t be the last drought and we must build resilience to help those on the land as they face future challenges,” Ms Allen said.
“The recent rains have offered a sigh of relief and they do point to a more positive upcoming season, however until the cheques are in the bank, many of our farmers are still doing it tough.“Farmers and regional communities called for support in proofing long term against drought and these grants help put the focus firmly on the future.”
Eligible farm businesses located in the local government areas of: Buloke, Yarriambiack, Loddon, Northern Grampians, Horsham, Hindmarsh, Gannawarra, Pyrenees, Central Goldfields, West Wimmera and Ararat are encouraged to apply.
Applications will close 30 June 2017, or when funds are fully expended.
