BULLOCKS and weaner steers remained on par and heifer prices still compared favourably to their brothers at Bairnsdale on Friday.
Competition was strong across the yarding of 1455 head, with Jimmy Matthews for Garrison’s Feedlot and agents from Radford’s Butchers and Collison’s Meats competing against South Gippsland restockers and livestock buyer Campbell Ross, who was buying larger cattle for interstate cartage.
Among the grown cattle, Hollingsworth Logging, Glenaladale, sold a pen of 16-18mo Angus steers, 471kg, at $1440. Nungurner’s G&K Whelan sold a pen of 15-16mo Angus steers, 463kg, $1430. Both pens were bought by Mr Ross, who put together a line of black cattle.
A lighter pen of 23 Angus steers, 346kg, G&K Whelan, sold to $1140, average $1060.
Hollingsworth Logging also sold 16mo heifers, 419kg, at $1204. They were bought by Kevin Glover, South Gippsland, to grow out on grass.
Delegate’s S Walcott sold Hereford and Angus grown steers to $1400, av $1200.
The feature line on Friday was Tom and Damien Ventry’s Deddick Springs’ Charolais – 10-11mo weaner steers and heifers that sold to $1150, for a pen of eight steers, ave 408kg lwt. Their steers made from $880 and a pen of 18-month-old steers, 431kg, sold at $1200. Their Charolais heifers sold for $835-$962, and pen of Angus heifers sold to $945, ave $853.
“They are good prices, the best we’ve experienced,” Damien Ventry said.
Orbost’s JB&JM Robinson sold 8-9mo Charolais steers to $1160, av $993. A pen of 17 same-age heifers sold at $860. J&N Calvert, Sarsfield, sold 16 Gelbvieh steers, 10mo, 308kg, at $960, and 13 heifers, 266kg, at $800.
Among the lighter and plainer steers, Johnsonville’s Peter Kramme sold four pens of 10mo weaned Herefords to $760, av $731. Two pens were bought by Les Ingram on behalf of Shoreham Farms in South Gippsland.
All told, young and lighter stock sold very dear at Bairnsdale on Friday, with prices driven by the competition from feedlots and restockers.
Among cows yarded, many with calves at-foot, prices were back a bit on recent activity, with many of the mothers in plain condition.
