55 of 59 bulls sold to $16,000 twice av $5936
CLUDEN Newry Angus stud, Jessiefield, Longford, Tasmania, had a very strong sale on Monday, selling more bulls than ever before and for a higher average and top price than last year’s result.

This year, vendors the Hughes family sold 55 of 59 bulls for an average of $5936, which was $1181 above last year’s and across 12 more bulls.
The sale’s top price was also notably higher, as they sold two bulls for $16,000 compared to last year’s $10,000 high.
The first bull to reach the sale-top was lot 3 Cluden Newry Docklands K57 (AI) that was sold to Scott Bowden, Tas. It was the sole purchase for commercial producer Mr Bowden who had last purchased at Cluden Newry some years ago.
Cluden Newry Docklands K57 had BreedPlan estimated breeding values (EBVs) of moderate birth weight at 4.8 kilograms and good growth of 200-day weight +45kg (top 30 per cent), 400-day +84kg (top 20pc), 600-day +119kg (10pc), scrotal size +3.3cm (top 1pc), EMA +5.6 square centimetres, and positive for rib, rump and intramuscular fat (IMF). He also had the equal highest EMA scan in the catalogue.
Cluden Newry’s Jock Hughes said his sire Carabar Docklands D62 (AI) was new to the stud and had proven to produce good calves with short gestation length, calving ease and a good spread of growth and positive fat.
Mr Hughes said Cluden Newry Docklands K57 had a great combination of phenotype and figures.
The second bull to reach $16,000 was lot 8 Cluden Newry Keel K153 (AI) that was knocked down to a client of Dick Whale, Independent Breeding & Marketing Service. This client also purchased lot 27 for $9000.
Cluden Newry Keel K153 (AI) was by home-bred sire Cluden Newry Equator F10 (AI) – a larger framed Ardrossan Equator A241 (AI) (ET) son with exceptional length and carcase traits combined with calving ease and great laid-in shoulders.
Mr Hughes said lots 3 and 8 both led weight gain in their respective management groups.
Volume buyers of the sale included John Drysdale, Yarck, who made the trip from Victoria last year to attend the CLuden Newry sale for the first time. Then he bought one bull and Mr Hughes said he was so pleased with its performance, he follwed up by buying six bulls av $3900 this year.
A total of nine bulls went to the mainland, seven to King Island, a few to Flinders Island and the rest to Tasmanian buyers.
Sattler Pastoral Company, Waterhouse, Tasmania, secured five bulls av $4400 and with four each were Fred Perry of King Island (av $7500), Michael Propsting (av $5875) and Tim Gunn (av $6625), both of Waterhouse, Tas.
Mr Hughes said the majority of buyers were existing and there was a number of new clients.
He said that helped a very strong sale, including a clearance rate that was pleasantly surprising given many cows had been sold out of the state because of the prevailing dry.
“But the sale result also speaks to the positives in the beef industry and it was great to see what people were willing to pay; but we also offered good value to our clients with half the bulls selling for $5000 or less.”
