THE VICTORIAN Livestock Exchange is the official owner of the Korumburra saleyards business, after the sale became official last Saturday.Current saleyards manager Ross Svenson sold the business but still owns the site, which he purchased from the South Gippsland shire last year. The VLE have merged the Koonwarra and Korumburra saleyards businesses and is currently conducting sales at Korumburra. The business is in the process of updating the Koonwarra yards, including putting in soft floors and installing a roof.VLE managing director Graham Osborne said this week that the renovations were about 50 per cent completed. He hopes they will be finished in late April or early May. Sales will then be transferred from Korumburra to Koonwarra, and the Korumburra yards closed.Mr Svenson said the livestock industry was undergoing a period of rapid change, that looked set to accelerate even further."It's a trend that's going to increase right throughout Victoria."He said occupational health and safety as well as animal welfare concerns were now a priority for both agents and the community.Although Korumburra was just a small player in the scheme of things, he said it had to move with the industry. And he said 18 months to two years down the track it would become obvious to everyone that the merging of the business with Koonwarra was the best decision possible.Already he said informed people could see that the consequences of the move would be for the best result for industry in South Gippsland.
