Damien Meagher, WISS Hamilton, inspecting a sample of elite wool he classed from client Bryan Clarke’s clip at Napier View. The bale recorded an average fibre diametre of 18.8 microns and a yield of 74 per cent.

Lindenow dairy farmer Phil Evans was featured in the “getting environmental” section with his recycled tractor tyres which he had turned into stock troughs. Mr Evans discovered the idea while surfing the internet and converted five tyres. He used concrete to seal the base.

well-known Stock & Land stalwart Mike Nixon was writing the prestigious What's in Store in the back section.

Former Glentrevor principal John Yelland, Berrigan, NSW, at the controversial sale of Glentrevor Hereford cattle at Wodonga. Glentrevor was the oldest Hereford stud in Australia at the time, and the decision to sell off the Glentrevor prefix drew strong criticism from the crowd.

FORMER Stock & Land journalist Don Story reported on possible locations of the new Newmarket saleyards after it was decided to close the central location to make way for a housing development.

ST Gabriels Hereford stud sold for an undisclosed price in what was believed to be the largest private transaction for a complete stud of Hereford cattle in Australia. 
It rivalled the 1960 purchase of the famous Hobartville Hereford stud by Lionel Israel. 
The new owners were Robert and Pam Hutchins, Leigh Park, Inverleigh, and John and Dennis Wells of Sydney and Adelaide.

Working out their figures at the Birregurra annual cattle sale were Lindsay and Margaret Stewart, Yan Yan Gurt West, Deans Marsh. They sold five roan heifers for $289.50 each.

Gavin Rowe, Lovely Banks, near Geelong, stripping a 50-acre barley crop for the Wallace family at Moorabool. He is pictured on his lunch break levelling the load before being trucked to the Barley Board’s receival depot at Geelong. Mr Rowe estimated the crop would go 15 bags to the acre.

BACK in '72 the Australian sheep industry was on a major destocking spree.

THE Australian sheep industry appears to be engaged in one of the greatest destocking sprees in history. 
At least 51.5 million sheep and lambs will be slaughtered in 1971-72 - the equivalent of the combined sheep populations of Victoria and South Australia.
Low wool and mutton prices and seasonal conditions have been attributed to the trend.

The Dunne family's win in the Northern Districts wheat championship.

Under a threatening sky, Fred Terrill strips his successful wheat crop at Fairfield Rutherglen.

Fred Terrill, Fairfield, Rutherglen, runner-up in the Northern District Wheat Championship, says rain saved his crop "in the nick of time".

Melbourne stock agent Brain Coridas bought these 10 Hereford heifers at the top price of $168.50 at the first Hamilton weaner sale in 1972, from Malcolm Fraser, Nareen Station, Nareen. Also pictured is JW Ellis of Southern Farmers, who conducted the sale.

About 16,200 people attended the second Australian Quarter Horse Championship Show at Moe. The open cutting section was won by Gary McPhee, Benalla, riding Alamo, while the high point working horse was King Ranch Amber, ridden by Greg Gilpin from King Ranch, Bowral, NSW.

THE first pure-bred Charolais cattle arrived in Victoria on the New Zealand cargo vessel Marama. In the shipment were seven-eighths Charolais and some half-bred heifers. LOOKING back half a century to January 8, 1964, photos and illustrations were appearing with greater regularity in the pages of Stock &amp; Land.

We look back at what was making news in January 1964.

A BIG decision to increase the levy for wool promotion from 10 shillings to 27 shillings a bale was taken in Canberra at the Australian Wool Industry Conference. 
The increase was to ensure wool would be in a special position in the fibre markets and to "divorce it from the threat of continued reductions in the price of synthetic fibres".

The front page of the January 8, 1964 edition, with the Australian Wool Industry Conference front page news, while the major photo is of Geoffrey Williamson and John Leishman with ewes from AG Leishman’s Ryeland stud at Clunes. The stud is number 1 in the Ryeland stud register of Victoria.

The back page was vastly different from the livestock focus it has today, featuring recipes, fashion ideas and other information for the women and children of the household.

Livestock sales were also the backbone of the paper in 1964.
