The former ABC personality Andy Muirhead today faced a fresh count in his child pornography case in Hobart.

Muirhead, 34, first appeared in the magistrates' court earlier this month on one federal charge of using a carriage service, the internet, for child pornography material.

Today he faced a second charge under state law of possessing child exploitation material.

The former host of ABC TV's The Collectors and Hobart breakfast radio did not enter a plea to either charge.

Dressed in a suit and wearing spectacles, he sat in the rear of the court, and nodded his head when magistrate Mr Sam Mollard remanded him on bail to reappear on October 13.

Muirhead's lawyer, Ms Marita Altman, told Mr Mollard that the defence's analyst would now need to examine material collected by the Australian Federal Police.

Ms Altman said the analyst would need to go to AFP headquarters in Melbourne to access a computer held there.

Mr Mollard said that following the laying of the fresh charge, the matter would need to go to the Supreme Court for hearing.
