Agents offered a heavier than expected lineup of cattle, at Kyneton’s monthly store cattle sale last Wednesday.
Elders Kyneton livestock manager Brendan Coxon said despite prevailing dry conditions, cattle presented well.
Mr Coxon said the yarding of 690-head saw heavier cattle make 265-295 cents per kilogram, and lighter cattle make 290-330c/kg.
Steers made from $640-$1710 per head, while heifers made from $680-$1200/head, and cows and calves made from $1100-$1600/unit.
A standout line was by ‘Crump’, whose 16 month-old Angus steers, 480 kilograms, made $1340/head for a pen of nine, and 14 440kg heifers made $1200/head.
‘JR Gray’ sold September-October drop, mixed-sex Angus weaners.
Their steers made from $700-$930/head, and heifers made from $600-$740/head.
‘Gleeds’ sold eight 14 month-old Angus steers, 395kg, for $1200/head.
‘Keeble’ sold seven month-old Angus steer weaners for $890/head, or 328c/kg.
McGrath Rodwells Livestock auctioneer Kieran McGrath said the sale was slightly cheaper than previous markets.
“Given how dry it is in most of the state, and even though we had an inch of rain over the previous weekend, the sale was certainly a little bit cheaper,” Mr McGrath said.
“There were no major feedlots in attendance, but there were a couple of wholesalers, who both process and feedlot cattle, who bought a few.”
He said other buyers came from Castlemaine to Kilmore, and other local surrounding districts.
“There’s been a bit of rain in the district, but most others haven’t had much,” he said.
“The recent rain was fantastic, but everybody would benefit from more rain in the next couple of weeks.”
The next store sale at Kyneton will be held one week early because of the Anzac Day holiday, now on Wednesday, 18 April, at 11am.
