Roger Polkinghorne, principal of the Charinga group of Merino studs at Berrimal, Victoria judged the fine/medium wool classes, working his way through a large exhibition of classically bred sheep.
Graduating through the August-shorn two-tooth class, the ram exhibited by Hamish McLaren, Nerstane stud, Woolbrook progressed through to being judged champion fine medium wool August-shorn ram and finally awarded the grand championship for fine medium wool ram.
He has tremendous scale, a great carcase and topline with very bright and soft wool, Mr Polkinghorne said.
His early maturity is also impressive as producers are wanting to turn off their stock earlier.
The two-tooth ram carried a fleece measuring 19.9 micron with 98.8 percent comfort factor.
Reserve grand champion ram was exhibited by Patrick and Andrew Davis, Demondrille, Harden with their six-teeth ram which had previously been judged champion March-shorn ram.
He has great thickness, quality and style, Mr Polkinghorne said.
A really good type of sheep.
Hamish McLaren also exhibited the reserve champion August-shorn ram, which had been successful in the four-tooth class.
John and Greg Alcock, Greenland stud, Bungarby successfully exhibited the grand champion fine medium wool ewe which had come through the two-tooth March-shorn class and then been awarded the March-shorn championship.
She is a great wool producer, Mr Polkinghorne said.
A very feminine ewe with a great skin and stands well she can only get better with age.
The reserve grand champion ewe was exhibited by James and Julie Barron, Adina stud, Cooma.
Their March-shorn four tooth ewe was also judged to be reserve champion March-shorn fine medium wool ewe.
In the August-shorn ewe classes, the championship was awarded to Hamish McLaren, Nerstane stud, Woolbrook for his entry in the two-tooth class.
Mr Polkinghorne considered the ewe a lovely fertile type.
She has a good barrel, superb wool which is very soft and she has a pure face, he said.
The reserve champion August-shorn ewe was exhibited by Garry Cox, Langdene stud, Dunedoo for his ewe which had also be entered in the two-tooth class.
Patrick and Andrew Davis, Demondrille stud, Harden were the most successful March-shorn Merino sheep exhibitor (excluding Poll Merinos).
