After a top quality offering of very good quality, well bred, steer and heifer calves, in Tuesday’s annual autumn calf sale, at Bairnsdale, Friday’s fortnightly regular store sale was a much different offering.
The penning of 1550 head included yearling steers, heifers and a mixture of breeds and condition, and sold to less competition.
Heading the sale was BJ&HM Sharp, selling 23 Angus steers, 577-593 kilograms liveweight, which were in prime condition.
Hopkins River Feedlot purchased the top weight pen for $1550, and the next pen went to South Gippsland at $1545. These prices were top of the day.
This was a really interesting sale, which offered opportunities for those looking for a bargain.
FC Griebenown & Son, Orbost, sold 48 yearling Hereford steers from 489-530kgs, that made $1320-$1430, equaling 264-275c/kg lwt, being a good sale for their weight.
On the other hand, a pen of Charolais steers, 547kgs, made only $1250, which was at the other end of the scale.
K&M Bridle sold 7 yearling Hereford steers, 405kgs, for only $920, but their young steers made from $660-$760, which was a good result for them.
Many of the steers sold for over 300c/kg lwt, creating some very good results.
J&L White sold Charolais cross steers, 385kgs, for $1160, and P Honey, 12 Angus steers, 343kgs, for $1050.
However, the sale of the day went to K&W Ingram who sold their annual drop of Angus-Hereford steer calves, three weeks early, due to the failing season.
Their 134 steers sold to very strong competition, making between $950-$1210, or 308-333c/kg, average 324c/kg lwt.
Clonmore Angus sold 38 steer calves from $650-$790, or an estimated 325-329c/kg lwt.
However, Friesian steers sold to poor competition, and weight for age were cheaper.
A number of pens sold from $250-$530, and JA Vardy sold 26 good quality steers over 12 months, from $440-$480.
A good quality offering of younger heifers sold to similar trends.
Yearling heifers sold to $1030 for 16 Angus heifers of M&S Kell.
S White sold Angus heifers for $1000, and Young’s Creek Pastoral, Charolais heifers to $1000. One sale was mid-range, the other at the lower end.
Feedlot competition led to solid prices for younger heifers with most making from $735-$890, or 270-292c/kg lwt.
R&V Russell sold European cross heifers to $890, and Grassvale Farms, Murray Grey heifers for $830.
Lighter weight Hereford and Angus-Hereford heifer calves sold by C&L Troake made $735, in a good sale.
Closing off the sale were plain to poor condition cows and calves, which for their quality, sold fairly well. Most sold between $910-$1180.
Poor conditions saw ‘The Camp’, Forge Creek, just out of Bairnsdale, sell 77 Hereford cows, PTIC to calve from the end of April.
These were drafted in several pen lots, but were purchased in one hit for $1080. These cows were in good condition and the price overall of the 77 head was a good outcome
