BOONAROO ANGUS
92 of 96 bulls sold to $18,000 to average $7750
It was another successful day last Friday for Boonaroo Angus. After the success of winning the RASV Heifer Challenge the previous week, they backed up that success with a strong sale result with more bulls offered then 2017.
Boonaroo stud principals Shane and Jodie Foster, Casterton, sold an extra eleven bulls this year, while their average has come back slightly on last year’s results, due to seasonal conditions it was still a strong sale with an average price of $7750.
Boonaroo GPS J6 M103 topped the sale at $18,000 being knocked down to repeat clients CR & LM Priest, Kyneton. Mr Priest was a first time buyer at Boonaroo in 2017 when he also purchased the top priced bull for $17,000.
Mr Priest along with his agent Kieran McGrath, McGrath Rodwells, Kyneton, said that they came back to Boonaroo this year due to the great customer support they have received from the Fosters.
This year’s 810 kilogram, 18 month old bull, was a real standout sire to start the sale. M103 is out of a New Zealand breed Cricklewood 466 cow and sired by Anvil J006, a KC HAAS GPS son, which also sired the top priced bull purchased by Mr Priest in 2017.
M103 has recorded estimated breeding values of +6.7 for birth weight through to +143 for 600 day weight with a +3.9 for eye muscle area and +2.0 for intramuscular fat depth. His growth figure is in the top 1% for the breed. This potential stud sire holds a great structure and impeccable temperament.
“Today we were after bulls that will suit our strong cow herd, so we were after bulls with frame, low birth weights for easy calving, temperament, structure and EBVs. We bought bulls that we thought would help improve our herd as we are always striving to top the Kyneton weaner calf markets in January,” Mr Priest said.
Mr Priest also purchased a further two bulls incouding Lot 4, Boonaroo Kingdoms Dream M129, a son of the $150,000 Millah Murrah Kingdom K35, for the second top priced bull at $16,000, and Lot 8, Boonaroo Gain M128, sired by Boonaroo Gain G20, for $14,000 which was equal third topped price bull on the day. Mr Priest’s three purchases averaged $16,000.
The sale was well supported by clients from across South Australia and Victoria with McCarthy Livestock, Lucindale, SA, being the volume buyer purchasing six bulls to a top of $8500 (twice) to average $6833.
With other volume buying support being KJ Upton, Casterton, who purchased five bulls to average $5800, Hill and Waters Farms, Lake Mundi, with four bulls for $6625 and Herb Meinck also with four bulls for $5675.
“We are very pleased with today’s result with a strong clearance and great average even with further bulls added to the offering. We had plenty of repeat clients buying but also a few new clients so overall it was a very good day,” stud co-principal Jodie Foster said.
Elders auctioneer Ross Milne said: “It was a very good solid sale with good top-end inquiry while buyers were still able to shop with great value at around the average price, with a strong clearance selling more bulls.”
