“Opportunity” is the common theme when speaking to boarders at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) as to why they chose to attend the renowned independent day and boarding school.

The college is located at Kew, only eight kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD.

Year 10 boarding scholarship recipient Cec Reid is a great example of making the most of the offerings.

“There’s so much choice,” she said.

Cec started at MLC at the beginning of 2017.

“Just last year, I’ve been able to do sculpture, photography, row in the Head of Schoolgirls Regatta, visit the French Film Festival, and try different sports.”

Hailing from Ballarat, Cec found moving into MLC’s Tiddeman Boarding House a “really smooth transition”.

Staff pride themselves on creating a warm, friendly environment for the 120 boarders – a harmonious mix of rural, regional and international students.

The choice of learning pathways when entering Year 11 and 12 was also part of the appeal for Cec.

“I wanted to study the IB,” she said. The International Baccalaureate program is one of three pathways the college offers its Year 11 and 12 students, as well as VCE and VCE VET programs – with an unrivalled choice of 69 subjects.

MLC offers a number of boarders’ scholarships, including a boarding all-rounder, principal’s and indigenous scholarships.

“Our scholarship program has been designed to enable each student to realise her potential through the recognition, reward and encouragement of exceptional talent and ability,” said MLC principal Diana Vernon.

The lifelong friendships, new independence and learning experiences make the boarding journey unforgettable.

As the 2017 boarding prefects said to new boarders: “Welcome to the sisterhood of a lifetime!”.
