LOCAL buyers were active at Kyneton, “making” the annual weaner sale, according to Landmark Dwyer’s Greg Dwyer.
Competition came from Harmony Foods, Landmark South Gippsland, and Hardwick, who bid for what Mr Dwyer said was a very good line of cattle.
“I think they sold to our expectations,” Mr Dwyer said.
“On a per kilogram, they sold for 340-350 cents for Angus steers and a lot sat in that 300-330c, which was around the mark we thought.
“It was a very, very good line up of heifers, two or three lanes of very good quality heifers, and they were pretty close to the market.”
Lighter heifers were dearer, he said.
“There was a fair bit of local competion, at the same time, which really made the sale.”
He said local restockers were active, building up numbers.
“It’s a bit of a difficult time, at the moment, with the stores and fats, but you have to trade on,” he said.
Spring Bank sold two, 10-11 month old Weemalah bld steers for $1310.
The first lane of Angus steers started off at $1250, for a pen of 12, a/c Hugh and Jenny Dettman.
The 10 month-old Pert Angus bld steers weighed 422kg, and sold for 296c/kg.
The Dettmans also had a pen of eight heifers, weighing 395kg, which sold for $1160, or 393c/kg.
The best presented pen at the sale, 14 a/c The Active Corporation, Glendene, Pert Angus and Webb Black bld, sold for $1240, or 307c/kg.
Glendene also sold a pen of 12, 398kg heifers for $1145, or 287c/kg.
Hereford steers ranged from $1200 to $1070, with a/c Barro selling a pen of 15 Wolbull bld animals, weighing 384kg for 312c/kg.
Barro also sold a second pen of 16, for $1170, or 356c/kg.
A pen of 23 Lemah Park Red Angus/Simmental cross steers, March-April drop, weighing 323kg, sold for $1070, or 331c/kg.
“Red Angus is something we have been trialling for quite a few years now, with the Simmentals, and it works quite well,” Lemah Park’s Alan James said.
“We’ve had quite a good season, the trouble is there is no bottom in the paddocks, generally the tops are okay, but there is nothing underneath.
“It’s just been that sort of year.”
But he said he was happy with the result, which was slightly down on last year.
“They are nine kilograms average heavier, than last year, so that helps.”
