Expectations were high for the Yea store cattle market, Friday, However, those expectations were not achieved according to Elders auctioneer, Ryan Sargeant.
Agents offered almost 1400 head, including older steers, weaners, cows and calves, plus heifers.
The quality of the yarding was mixed, and sold to a depleted crowd.
Yearling steers led the way, with a few pens of steers, 0-2 teeth, selling $60-$80 per head under expectations.
Ryan Sargeant said “It was a tough day for auctioneers. I passed in some of the steers, initially, but sold them after the sale, as i thought they could have made more”.
Steers, 470 to over 500 kilograms liveweight, sold mostly for the equivalent of 270-280c, where recent sales have been around 300c/kg lwt. R&J Cavill sold Angus steers for $1400
Competition ebbed and flowed for the younger steers, but was very strong on small lines of well bred 2017 drop calves. H Miller sold 18 Angus steers for $1115.
Cows and calves sold to better demand which saw most sell between $1600&$2300.
Competition for heifers relied mainly on three commission buyers, who were purchasing for for grain feeding. I&P Rallston sold Hereford heifers for $1120, Murrindindi Station, 10 Charolais cross heifers for $1050, and Lindsay Park, Hereford-Charolais cross for $1005.
