Although still sitting occasionally behind the steering wheel of an 18-wheeler, former Casterton livestock transporter Manni Carlin has taken to cattle breeding in his semi-retirement.
Now into his seventh or eighth cattle breeding season, Mr Carlin will this year turn off a well breed, well-handled and very quiet draft of Hereford weaners that will be weaned six weeks come sale day.
Mr Carlin Hereford calves are March/April-drop. They are breed by Yarram Park bulls out of a base of Taronga-blood cows.
Mr Carlin says growing conditions this year have been some of the best he has experienced as cattle breeder.
“These calves have never been a day without feed in their lives” Mr Carlin said.
“They are some of the best I’ve weaned and with the pastures that’s still available they have plenty of opportunity to go on.”
The Carlin Hereford steer calves will be offered as part of 2500 head all-breeds steer sale being conducted by Landmark Casterton on Tuesday January 9th.
The schedule is scheduled to start at the earlier time of 8:30am so intending buyers can return to Hamilton for the Landmark-Elders all-breeds steer sale that is due to start at 12 noon.
