KURRA-WIRRA Merino stud has recorded a near total clearance of Merino and Poll Merino rams at its recent on-property ram sale at Culla.
The stud offered 48 rams, and sold all but one, to hit an average price of $1409, which is up a significant $569 on last year’s average price of $840.
The sale reached its top of $2200 for Lot 13, 160684, a Merrilville Giant grandson, who recorded a maternal behaviour score of one, something the stud has been working incredibly hard on.
“We’re really trying to work on our lamb survivability, and his mother was obviously an exceptional mother,” stud co-principal Anthony Close said.
The ram was purchased by Rob Ellis, WISS Woolbrokers, on behalf of Ardenside Angus stud, Tooma, NSW, who bought nine rams in total, av $1622.
A big volume buyer was ‘Clarke’s Lake Trading’, Apsley, who bought 22, av $1146.
Mr Close said they are return clients who had been using terminal sires over their Merinos, but have recently swapped back into joining straight to Merinos.
“They bought a couple last year, but the way the market has gone, they’ve swung back to Merinos heavily,” he said.
He said they were happy with the sale’s competition.
“Nine rams sold for over $2000, which is an improvement on last year,” he said.
“We had new clients, and regular clients who were after more rams.”
