Bairnsdale
Yarding 2406
Steers to $1960
Heifers to $1470
Cows & calves $2300
IT was a case of have and have-not at Bairnsdale store sale on Friday, where 2406 cattle were yarded. Those who have pasture were buying cattle and those who are relying on fodder continued to offload livestock.
Grass finishers competed strongly against each other and feedlot and meat buyers from Gathercole's, Collinson's, Westside, TFI, Hopkins River and Garrison's. Cattle were bought by South Gippsland and northern NSW restockers and, care of Paul & Scollard, farmers in north east Victoria.
Paul & Scollard agents, Dan Ivone and Luke Deimel, went home with 240 weaner cattle and 107 cows and calves.
"We bought seven double-deck loads," Mr Ivone said.
"The weaner cattle will be grown out over the next 12 months. Those who bought the cows and calves will turn them off by winter."
It was the second store sale in a row where Paull & Scollard agents pushed competition at Bairnsdale, to secure cattle for clients with good pasture growth.
Having said that, weaner cattle were largely younger and plainer last Friday than previous sales. So the prices for these feeder cattle, in the 10-14-month-old range, were back a bit. Cattle with a bit of gloss, in all categories, returned higher prices.
