The state government has approved grant funding of more than $7.709 million for local infrastructure projects in North West Queensland.
Upgrading the telecommunication link between Normanton and Karumba to optic fibre and installing a fully integrated security camera system for Richmond will be funded through the $60 million Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.
Local Government Minister Mark Furner said the approved and preliminary approved projects in the North West region will create more than an estimated 155 full-time equivalent jobs.
“The delivery of these projects will generate employment and boost economic activity for local communities,” Mr Furner said.
“Investing in infrastructure is a very practical way to generate confidence in a community making it a better place to live, work and operate a business.”
Mount Isa City Council gets $205,476 to evaluate the performance of council assets.
Boulia Shire Council gets $191,880 for projects such as an asset management plan, security cameras and lighting at Robinson Park and improving water treatment operations.
Burke Shire Council gets $950,029 for upgrading the Burketown sewage treatment plant.
Carpentaria Shire Council gets $1.74 million for the Normanton to Karumba fibre optic project.
Cloncurry Shire Council gets preliminary approval for $2.58 million for upgrading the Cloncurry sewage treatment plant.
Diamantina Shire Council gets $232,000 to refurbish the heritage listed Birdsville Courthouse and upgrading the Jardine Street Park with a roof over the playground, a gazebo and landscaping.
Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council gets $359,640 for the construction of a water park playground.
Flinders Shire Council gets $480,000 for constructing footpaths to connect the town area with the CBD.
McKinlay Shire Council gets $797,985 for constructing additional council staff housing.
Richmond Shire Council gets $172,756 for three projects including an emergency generator for the Disaster Management Centre, upgrading lighting at council recreational facilities and a fully integrated security camera system for the town area.
Mount Isa Mayor Joyce McCulloch welcomed the grants.
“The funding helps council deliver important infrastructure and makes Mount Isa an even better place to live,” Cr McCulloch said.
