THE 20th Derrynock on property sale at Trentham East was further endorsement of the stud’s progress in producing high quality rams suited for both stud and commercial use.
The sale opened with a larger than usual offering of 40 Poll Dorset ewes offered in pens of two.
Stud principal Simon Beattie commented that increase was a result of larger bias towards ewes in the 2016 lambing, with ewes accounting for almost 65 per cent of the drop.
The elite ewes predominantly July/August drop twins carried C+ average of approximately 200.
The top price of $1400 came for lot 6 and formed part of 4 ewes bought by Summit Poll Dorsets.
The ewe carried figures of 0.42 for birth weight 16.2kg for post-weaning weight (pwwt) and +2.8 for muscle.
The 29 specially selected rams opened with a flurry of phone and direct bidding, ultimately the first lot selling to Simon Male at Aberdeen Poll Dorsets, Henty, NSW, for $17,000 the sale top.
The ram born on 4th of July ranked in the top 1% of terminal sires for Trade $ at $114.8 and gestation length (GL) at -1.7.
Sired by Pollambi 52/13 the ram was 0.55kg for birth weight and 17.7kg for post-weaning weight (pwwt).
It was Mr Male’s sole purchase for the day, and the ram will be sent straight for semen collection for later use within the stud.
He commented – he’s probably our third ram from Derrynock and they seem to click with our ewes well.
His lambplan figures without being ridiculously high are well balanced for what we want and he has plenty of good potential sire about him.
He is a heavy deep muscled ram with a nice clean face and points.
Other notable results within the selected rams included the sales to studs including Mullinger Park Poll Dorsets, Kurralea, Moora Hills, Bundara Downs and Morton Studs with prices ranging from $5000 - $10000.
The balance of the rams found good commercial support at prices between $1700 - $2600.
The 108 flock rams achieved a total clearance and a good average of $1547.
The top of $2800 paid by Langdons Hill Poll Dorsets Newlyn who also purchased 2 ewes.
The ram carried figures of +3.4mm post weaning eye muscle depth (PEMD) and was 218 for Carcase-Plus.
Volume support came from multiple commercial buyers including EJ & SK Mcgrath at Strathdownie buying 15, CG Schlitz at Kerang taking 14 and Yaloak Estate Ballan taking 11 Poll Dorset rams along with 8 maternal rams.
The meat maternal offering of 29 rams closed the sale, with the top price of $2400 paid by the Defegely Partnership, Dobie, who took home 9 rams.
Other strong support for the maternals came from Banongill, Skipton buying 10 rams ranging from $1000 -1100.
The selling agents were Elders Kyenton.
