THE Wide Bay area continues to cop a hammering deluge as an upper low lies over the central interior of Queensland.
Water is beginning to submerge some local roads in the Bundaberg region with warnings being issued for more rain expected.
This will mark the third straight day of overcast and rainy conditions for the town.
While dams, creeks and rivers have been revitalised after an exceptionally dry winter, the torrential rain is expected to cause headaches for cane growers with harvesters unable to enter paddocks due to muddy conditions.
“Locations which may be affected include Town Of 1770, Miriam Vale, and Lowmead. 89mm has fallen in the past 3 hours at Miriam Vale,” the BOM said.
The BOM’s rainfall records show Bundaberg has received 104mm; Maryborough 105mm, Childers 102mm; Hervey Bay 85mm and Gin Gin 135mm, however heavy falls have been received since the bulletin’s release.
The Bundaberg Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) remains at the “alert” activation status as the severe weather warning remains in place.
The following flood watches/warnings are current:
- Flood Watch for coastal catchments from Bowen to Hervey Bay
- Minor Flood Warning for the Burrum River
- Minor Flood Warning for the Mary River
- Initial Moderate Flood Warning for the Kolan River and Baffle Creek
The forecast for Wednesday includes a very high (95 per cent) chance of rain, most likely in the morning and afternoon with the chance of a thunderstorm.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
- Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
- Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
- Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
- Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
- For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
