A VERY mixed yarding of 1670 cattle were brought together at Leongatha’s store cattle sale last Thursday. There were significant numbers of dairy and dairy-cross cattle among the draft.
This led to lacklustre bidding for much of the yarding; except where sizeable beef cattle were penned, where feedlot and meat buyers, in particular, were interested.
Cattle were brought in from as far afield as Shepparton, Bega Valley, Bombala and Ensay, as well as locally.
A feature line of 200 weaned 12mo Angus and Black Baldy steers, account John Commins Family Trust, Ensay, sold to $1240 – average liveweight (lvwt) 372kg for this pen.
Marlo’s PR Henderson Farms sent in 14-16mo Angus steers, 500kg, that returned $1500. Average across the draft of three pens of Black Baldy and Hereford steers was $1427.
Geoff Russell, Amberley Park, Nicholson, sent in Angus steers, 491kg, that sold to $1450.
DJ&KM Kuch, Darriman, sold EU-accredited Banquet- and Rennylea-bloodline Angus steers, 16mo, to $1430 – top pen averaged 453kg.
Charolais steers, 431kg, 12-13mo, by Delamere bulls, vendor Stan and Anne Harrison, Giffard West, sold at $1380. A pen of Angus-Shorthorn cross steers, 428kg, sold at $1400; same vendor.
Robinson and Hasthorpe, Tanjil South, sent in Charolais steers, 414kg, that sold at $1320.
Miralai Partnership, Bombala, sent in three pens of EU-accredited Hereford steers – the top pen ave 403kg sold at $1260.
White Creek Pastoral, Walkerville, sold Hereford steers, 412kg, to $1230.
Among the dairy-cross lines, L&V McLeod, Calrossie, sold 15mo bucket-reared Angus-Friesian steers, 498kg, that sold at $1320.
A second pen, 449kg, sold at $1080.
H&L Edden, Woodleigh, sold Angus-cross steers, $1040. Several pens of Friesian steers from RA&EP Watts, Shepparton, sold to $1150, ave lvwt 530kg.
Average return across the draft of steers was $890.
The same vendor sent in several pens of steer calves that sold to $390, ave $331.
There were a number of beef-breed heifers in the yarding at Leongatha.
DJ&KM Kuch, Darriman, sent in EU-accredited, 16mo, Banquet- and Rennylea-bloodline Angus heifers, 486kg, $1490.
A second pen from the same vendor, 459kg, sold at $1340.
There was a limited and relatively plain yarding of cows and calves.
A draft of 2012-drop Angus cows with 2-8wo Angus calves, Hazeldean- and Rennylea-bloodlines, sold to $1580, ave $1543.
Vendor was dryland farm Gamini P/L, ‘Jincumbilly Grazing, Bombala and purchaser of most of the lots was David Hall, who’s Fish Creek and Foster properties have received regular rainfall and he was expecting a Spring flush of pasture.
