IT WAS a solid store cattle yarding of 917 head at Sale on Friday, with a number of pens of steers and heifers with size and weight, actively sought by feedlot buyers.

There were three, in particular, competing on Friday – Hopkins River, Garvan Park and Garrison’s feedlots. Restockers and grass finishers from South Gippsland rounded out the buyers.

A feature line of 199, 12-13-month-old weaned Angus steers and heifers, vendor GG&EJ Bates, ‘Maidavale’, Munro, attracted a good yarding from across the eastern half of Gippsland.  The ‘Maidavale’ draft is based on Hazeldean and Maidavale bloodlines.

The 127 steers sold to $1210, for a pen average liveweight (ave) 389kg. The 72 heifers sold to $1025.

Among the heavier steers, IF&GW Mowat, Nambrok and Rosedale, sold two-year-old Hereford steers – ave 570kg at $1470 and ave 475kg at $1270. A&A Missen, Seaspray, sold Angus steers, 473kg, at $1400. A mixed pen of Angus and Hereford steers, 464kg, sent in by D&E Droppert, Sale, sold to $1220. M Norling sold Angus steers $1200. A pen of Angus steers, 386kkg, vendor A&J Gordon, sold at $1195. A second pen, same vendor, 346kg, sold at $1190. Several pens of Spry’s-bloodline steers were sent in by Hopfields Pty Ltd – the Shorthorns, 374kg, sold at $1155; the Angus steers, 380kg, sold at $1130. A pen of red Angus steers, same vendor, sold at $930.

WB&MW Hawkins also sold Angus steers, $1155. JH&HJ Derix sold Angus-Friesian-cross steers to $1120, ave $933.

Paul and Diane Marshall, Orbost, sent in a pen of Newcomen- and Mawarra-bloodline Hereford weaned steers that returned $1040.

Winindoo’s HW&A Stagg sent in Black Baldy steers, 410-348kg, that sold at $1000; a second pen, of Charolais steers, 333kg, sold at $970.

Stratford’s TJ&MD Robbins sold Hereford steers, 323kg, $960. Among the females, Paul and Diane Marshall’s Hereford heifers, Mawarra and Newcomen bloodlines, 403kg, sold at $1035. A second pen, 364kg, sold at $985. These were bought by Garrison’s feedlot.

Garvan Park feedlot successfully bid for the two pens of Nunniong- and Mawarra-bloodline Hereford heifers sent in by GJ Cameron and AL Crisp – the top pen, 364kg, sold at $940; the second pen sold at $860.

Also selling at $860, was a pen of Innesdale-bloodline Angus heifers, vendor Tim Crooke.

Jane and John Mosley, Briagolong, sent in a pen of Millah Murrah-bloodline Angus heifers that returned $840. Charolais heifers sent in by I&R Ripper returned $800. There was brisk competition for cows and calves at Sale. A pen of Angus and blue roan rejoined cows and calves sold to $1580; vendor was Lou and Rose Maher, Meerlieu.

Hereford cows and calves, vendor JWG Dean, Rosedale, sold at $1540. GN Gooch, Sale, sent in Hereford cows and calves for $1300.
