BUYERS flocked to the Jamestown feature ewe sale on Thursday last week, with a capacity yarding of 30,000 sheep and lambs offered.
The tops of the 1.5-year-old ewes were well up on last year’s sale, at $268 compared to $236.
Father and son Paul and David Thomas, PDL Thomas, Gulnare, sold the sale-toppers, a line of 149 North Ashrose-bloods, to Lyndoch brothers Dudley and Keith Koch.
David said his family had been selling at Jamestown for close to 15 years, and this year’s return was easily the highest price they had ever received.
GR&MA Catford, Orroroo, sold the second highest price 1.5yo ewes at $260, with 100 Greenfields-blds.
Jamestown vendors GI,BA&DG Simpson, sold 244 Bradfield-blds for $248 to Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen Penola.
PPH&S Penola also bought 158 Hamilton Run-bld ewes from Terinlee Pty Ltd, Jamestown, at $200.
The tops of the older ewes was $158 for a line of 132, 5.5yo Bradfield-blds from ND Simpson, Mannanarie, which were sold to Eudunda father and son Lyndon and Karl Zerner.
RS&KJ Jones, Kybunga, sold 200 Leahcim-bld 5.5yo ewes for $146.
Elders Jamestown livestock manager Jack Coleman said the top-end of the young ewes sold above expectations, while it was slightly cheaper than expected on the bottom-end.
“There are plenty of sheep coming on to the market, but prices haven’t dropped drastically,” he said.
“Considering how dry it is, it’s quite surprising that store sheep are still selling as well as they are.”
Wethers sold well at last week’s Jamestown sale, with 224 woolly Hamilton Run-blds from Terinlee Pty Ltd, Caltowie, making $118 to Hill Livestock.
Most woolly wether lambs sold from $95 to $110.
Not far behind the top price wethers were 503 shorn Flairdale-blds from Laskey Farming Trust, Orroroo, which made $116.
The majority of the shorn wether lambs made from $90-$105.
