Grassmere, Victoria South Suffolk breeder Barry Shalders, Willow Drive stud, has continued to represent the breed at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
Mr Shalders, the only exhibitor, took out the Supreme Champion with a young ram.
Tasmanian judge Chris Badcock said it was important for the smaller breeders to get the structure of their animals right.
“All the exhibits were very good, structurally, they had good feet, good mouths, good legs and displayed good carcase attributes, as well,” Mr Badcock said.
“Even though there was only one exhibitor, it doesn’t take away from the sheep which were presented.
Mr Badcock said he chose the ram as the animal was well balanced, very correct and displayed maturity.
“I found he was a good, complete, balanced ram.”
The ram weighed 97kilograms and had figures of a seven millimetres of fat, a 40mm muscle depth, 83mm muscle width and eye muscle area (EMA) of 25.6 square centimetres.
