Bauer Border Leicester stud has won the supreme exhibit of the breed with a junior ram.
The ram from the Ariah Park, NSW stud had also won supreme at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Bendigo in July.
The ram weighed 129.5kg and scanned 10mm fat, 49mm muscle depth, 105mm muscle width and 39.62sqcm muscle. Stud principal Jamie Buerckner said the August 2016 drop ram, nicknamed ‘Dusty’ was by a home-bred ram out of their Supreme line. They plan to retain the ram in the stud, and will join him in late February. Mr Buerckner said he would market semen packages of the ram too.
Judge Geoff Turnbull, Black Gate Border Leicesters, Wycheproof, said the young ram stood very well.
“He carries all the attributes of a good stud sire,” Mr Turnbull said.
“It’s a big, upstanding ram who covered a lot of ground.”
The champion Border Leicester ewe was awarded to the Talkook Border Leicester Stud, Crookwell, NSW. It was Ms Anderson’s first time exhibiting at the Royal Melbourne Show and they bought a team of three rams and three ewes. The champion ewe won reserve at the Canberra Royal Show.
