EAST Gippsland beef breeders were offloading excess cows and calves at Bairnsdale last Friday and buyers were keen, banking on hoped-for rain.
Cattle were plainer in this yarding than a fortnight ago, but that did not deter bidders from pushing prices higher for steers and heifers.
Buyers were grass-backgrounders from South and Central Gippsland, finishers from King Island and the Dunkeld district and a number of meat buyers.
Most steers and heifers offered were of weaned to yearling age.
Deddick Springs’ Ventry family sent in a draft of 18 to 20-month-old Angus, Black Baldy, Hereford and Charolais bullocks that sold to $1520.
Greg Trewin, Orbost, also sent in 18-20-month-old bullocks – Charolais and Angus – that sold at $1350. The same vendor sold 14-16-month-old Sharinda-bloodline Angus steers, 488kg, at $1430.
In a yarding of 1361, younger steers sold to $1610 – which was for Angus yearlings, 567kg, consigned by Gary Beasley, Gullaview P/L, Fernbank.
The same vendor sold a mixed pen of Charolais, Angus and Hereford steers, 493-560kg, to a top of $1410, average $1377.
AM Stagg, Metung, sent in Hereford steers, 470kg, that sold at $1410.
Bill and Jennie Heggie, Tambo Upper, sold 12-month-old Black Baldy steers, 446kg, at $1340.
CB Hutton Partnership, Hillside, sent in two pens of 12-13-month-old Mawarra-bloodline Hereford steers. The first pen, with average liveweight 400kg, sold at $1260 and those at 371kg returned $1140.
Peter Fraser, Ensay, sold Black Baldy steers, 337kg, $1210.
DJ&CE Williams, Flaggy Creek, sold Hereford and Angus steers, 379kg, at $1200.
Composite steers, 331kg, sold to $1200, average $1005; vendor MJH Pastoral, Bairnsdale.
Amanda and Adam Bartkowski, Ensay, sent in Angus and Black Baldy steers, for $1120.
Mario and Maria Vanzin, Woodglen, sold three pens of 11-12-month-old Angus steers to $1120, average liveweight 343kg.
Black Baldy calves from M Yeates, Meerlieu, sold at $960. Flaggy Creek’s Richard Hind sent in Angus calves for a return of $690.
Heifers sent in by Tom and Damian Ventry, Deddick Springs, Deddick, sold to $1280.
Rhys Hine, Woodglen, sold Angus heifers, 383kg, at $1170 and Hereford heifers, 342kg, $1000.
Bill and Jennie Heggie, Tambo Upper, sent in 12-month-old Black Baldy and Angus heifers, bought at $1010 by a South Gippsland grass finisher.
Ken and Kym Skews, Ensay, sold Hereford calves, $475.
Pregnancy-tested-in-calf (PTIC) joined Angus heifers, joined to a Tambo Angus bull, sold at $1450, vendor I Neville, Wy Yung.
Cows and calves sold to $1670 – Hereford pairs, rejoined and with second calf-at-foot (CAF), sent in by Ethel and Eric Jamieson, Jambro Pastoral, Broadlands.
Matani Holdings, Bengworden, sold a line of Angus cows and calves, three-six years old and rejoined to a Kunuma Angus bull, to $1640; average $1485.
VC&AJ Wyatt, Johnsonville, sent in Hereford cows and calves that sold at $1510 and Black Baldy and Angus pairs that sold to $1470.
Fernbank’s Greg Ross, GB Ross Pty Ltd, sold Black Baldy pairs, $1425 and Hereford pairs to $1410.
