EAST Gippsland beef producer John Coates is in desperate need of rain on his Buchan property.
Mr Coates said he has only received 225 millimetres of rain since January, whereas he would normally average 30 inches for the year.
“Since August last year, we have only had showers, there’s been no significant rainfall event at all,” Mr Coates said.
“One of our biggest recent rains was about a week ago, and that was only 9mm.
“We’ve only been getting 4mm and 5mm rainfall events, we only had 13mm in January.”
He said they are hoping to receive some rain in the next couple of days, but their hopes aren’t too high.
“We are badly in need of 50-100mm of rain as soon as possible, before things starts to warm up,” he said.
“There’s just no sub-soil moisture or surface moisture in the ground at all.
“Our paddocks are looking dry, and the dams are extremely low.
“There’s meant to be rain to come, but it doesn’t look like it will be much, if we get 10mm over the next few days, we’ll be lucky.”
