IT WAS a big day for the Suffolks and Corriedales, who each took out two first place ribbons in the interbreed judging at Sheepvention last week.
Sayla Park Suffolk stud, Kilmore, took out first place in the shortwool groups judging, with what stud co-principal Jon Sutherland said was “led by a ram that showed good muscling in his hind quarter, and who was followed by two very good ewes”.
Also winning champion shortwool ewe, Mr Sutherland said it was a privilege to be able to represent this year’s feature breed.
Sweetfield Corriedale stud, Mount Moriac, dominated in the longwool judging, taking out both champion ewe and ram.
After winning big at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show last month, stud co-principal Bron Ellis said she was “honoured” to have that success carry through.
“To think [the ram] came from Bendigo, and had the same success here at Hamilton, that’s a really big thing,” Ms Ellis said.
“They’re dual purpose animals, in both their carcase and wool, so to have them recognised for those attributes is just overwhelming.”
In the longwool groups, Jackson Farming (Border Leicesters), Moyston, came first, Sweetfield second, and Garvald Lincolns stud, Byaduk, came third.
Jackson Farming stud co-principal Carol Jackson said the win was a wonderful surprise.
“The Corriedales had been doing very well, so we were very surprised to take out the group win,” Ms Jackson said.
“They are fairly even sheep, with great Border Leicester heads and very dense wool.”
Gooramma Poll Dorset stud, Galong, NSW, took out first place shortwool ram, and co-principal James Corcoran (junior) said it was great to get the recognition.
“It’s a real positive for the stud, but also the breed, for it to take out supreme exhibit,” Mr Corcoran said.
“To get the accolade under eight judges, not just one, and to be against some really good animals who are all the best representations of their breeds, is really rewarding.”
Booloola White Suffolks stud, Baringhup, came second in the shortwool groups, and Mallee Park Poll Dorsets, Hopetoun, came third.
The second place shortwool ewe was again from Mallee Park Poll Dorsets, and third place was awarded to Mertex White Suffolks stud, Antwerp, while in the longwool, Koenarl English Leicester stud, Timboon, came second, and Jackson Farming came third.
Jackson Farming won second place longwool ram, Upland English Leicester stud, Main Ridge, won third, and in the shortwool, Booloola White Suffolks came second, and Deppeler Suffolks stud, Derrinallum, came third.
