Landmark, Elders and Sharp Fulgrabbe, Bairnsdale, combined to pen a good quality offering of 2158 cattle in their annual spring store sale, Friday.
The draw for this sale was more than 2800 head, but some lines were reduced or cancelled prior to sale day.
Opening the sale, Elders offered 44 high quality, yearling Charolais steers, 500-555 kilograms liveweight, of Whelan & Connally. Feedlot buyers were active here, paying from $1470-$1590.
Competition included five feedlot companies, and all made purchases, and many buyers from all over Gippsland.
Buyers from the north east were noted, but did not purchase, and one successful buyers from Camperdown.
Some other yearling steers sold fairly well. AJ&BJ AhSam, Omeo, sold 26 Hereford-Shorthorn steers from $1550-$1640, and TD&MD Trewin, 27 Charolais cross & Angus-Hereford steers, from $1360-$1480.
Major feature lines of cattle attracted much attention, and sold to strong competition.
K&J Alexander sold 140 Angus steers, 271-366kgs, from $960-$1290, selling to strong demand from repeat buyers. Equaling between 352-367c/kg lwt, put them near the top of the sale, in those terms.
Our season has been very difficult for farming this year, and although the cattle are in true store condition, i am glad to see them sold, as our silage has run out.
- Peter Nixon, Orbost.
D&R Stringer, Forge Creek, sold 111 Angus steers from $945-$1260, peaking at 372c/kg lwt.
Kent Park, Mt Taylor, sold their annual spring draft of Hereford steers, in light store condition, from $730-$965.
Quality bred, younger Angus steers of DS O’Brien & Partners sold well with 56 head making from $665-$850, although like numerous other, very light calves, the tail were good buying.
Many of the heifers were in fair to good condition and sold better than some expected. The supply of heifers was down from the draw, and this may have sparked stronger demand.
Whelan & Connally, sold 32 Charolais heifers for $1020, but D&R Stringer topped the heifer sale for weaned calves, selling 78 Angus heifers from $887-$1070.light heifer calves offered, Friday, prices were a little better than Tuesday.
Given there were fewer of the very light heifer calves offered, Friday, prices were reasonable. Kent Park sold 31 young Hereford heifers from $425-$640.
Cows and calves were few, and in store condition. G&T Farmer sold 4 Hereford cows & calves for $1500, and McCrae, Ensay, 15 Hereford cows with 16 calves at foot, for $1460.
