In the depths of winter, Leongatha agents offered just 908 cattle, Thursday. While the yarding was small, it did included two or three feature drafts.
The first was 78 Angus steers, Dunoon blood, offered by John Gilliam, Stony Creek. The SEJ pen card showed these 9-11 months old steers displayed all of the “Ticks”. Competition was strong here, which saw them sell from $800-$1040, and were estimated to weigh between 200&290 kilograms liveweight.
Second was the 66 Angus heifers, 10-12 months, Dunoon blood, of R Boddy & Sons, Woodside. It is very dry at Woodside, and Peter Boddy decided to sell early and preserve feed for the cows. Sold in two parcels, they from $880-$970, they equaled 336&340c/kg lwt, for which, Peter was very happy.
Third was another large draft of Friesian steers of Willdarben Farm, Giffard West. Once again, the season is very dry, and this was the third draft to be sold. Their 80 steers sold from $810-$950, which liveweight price terms was 20c/kg cheaper than their last sale, but still a reasonable result in a generally cheaper market.
A handful of heavier crossbred steers sold to $1390, and were $100-$120 per head cheaper.
A few yearling steers were offered, selling from $1160-$1310. The top price here, was acheived by two vendors, D Read, Woodside, for 10 Angus steers, 401kgs, and J&K Macauly, Alberton West, for the tops of 84 Angus-Hereford, and Hereford steers that averaged $1108.
Opening the sale, Elders offered 26 yearling Angus steers on behalf of Illeac Niominees P/L, Woodside, which sold from $1160-$1260. The first pen was purchased for Hopkins River feedlot, as was or or two other pens, the balance of the competition was all locals.
G Cummaudo, Mirboo North, sold 27 Charolais steers from $1170-$1160.
A&C O’Mara, Glengarry, sold 23 Angus steers (305kgs), TeMania blood, for $1100, which was one of the better sales on the day.
Illeac Nominees P/L, Woodside, sold 35 Angus heifers from $1100-$1200, and M,E&K Triantafyllou, 16 Charolais heifers for $1115, and feedlot competition aided these better prices.
Most heifers sold between $805&$970, or 300-340c/kg lwt. R Boddy&Sons, Woodside, sold their 66 Angus heifers from $880-$970.
At the conclusion of the sale was 6 Angus cows with Charolais calves at foot, 2-5 months, offered by J&A Dawson, Toora. These sold from $1560-$1700.
