INTERSTATE studs took out the grand champion Poll Merino ram and ewe.
The fine/medium ram from West Australian stud Lewisdale, Wickepin, that took the title was named Cohen 65, after the principals’ Ray and Helen Lewis’s grandson.
Judge Ben Wilson, Wilgunya stud, Dirranbandi, Queensland, described it was an outstanding ram with beautiful, rich wool. He said it would cut a lot of wool.
Mr Wilson said the fine/medium sire had a beautiful spring of rib and outstanding purity in the wool and muzzle.
"He is a terrific sire."
The four-tooth sire is a twin by Rhamily Benny and out of a Western Purple ewe and has wool figures of 20.8 micron, 3.2 SD, 15.4 CV and 99.4pc CF. Armidale, NSW, based stud Alfocton won grand champion Poll ewe of the show. Principal Chris Clonan said the fine wool ewe that had also done well at Sydney Royal Easter Show. It was embryo bred by sire Alfoxton Sampson, which was the champion fine wool ram in 2015 sold for $28,000.
The winning ewe had wool measurements of 16.7M, 2.7 SD and 99.8pc CF.
WA stud Rosedale Poll, exhibited the champion ultrafine wool Poll Merino ram.
Ultrafine wool judge Kevin Beaton, Kevlyn stud, Coojar, Victoria, said the Rosedale sire was a very square and correct ram with a beautiful ultrafine wool which tests well.
The four-tooth ram was sired by an Alfoxton sire and had wool figures of 15.0M, 2.4 SD, 16.0 CV and 99.9pc CF.
Russell and Heather Meaton said their Rosedale stud was one of very few studs in WA with ultrafine Merinos.
“We love being in the shearing shed and the feel of that wool,” Mr Meaton said.
