Champion Lincoln ram: Garvald, Byaduk, Vic
Champion Lincoln ewe: Garvald.
A GOOD season in Victoria’s Western District set up the Garvald Lincoln show team up for success, according to stud co-principal Rae Christie.
She said the season started early, providing feed all the way through.
“We got rain early and we have had good feed all the way through, although there has been no run off, as such, for the dams,” Ms Christie said.
The adults had eight months of wool, as the wet weather meant shearing them after last year’s Royal Melbourne Show was impossible. “It just kept drizzling, and once they are wet, they are wet - they are like a mat.”
The younger animals were in full wool, which Ms Christie said may have impressed the judge, David Jackson.
“It was bright, it was very broad lock, it was very lustrous, he was very impressed by it,” she said.
Mr Jackson agreed that while all the exhibits were good, it was the quality of the wool on the Garvald sheep, which stood out.
“All the sheep were good, in terms of their confirmation and structure, but the Garvald sheep had outstanding Lincoln wool,” Mr Jackson said.
The Christie’s also took out the Colin Christie Memorial Trophy, which is awared to the Supreme Champion South Suffolk, Romsey or Lincoln ram or ewe.
